Scoring
HOW DO YOU WIN THE VOLVO OCEAN RACE?
The event will continue to use a high scoring system e.g. in a 12-boat competition, 60 points will be awarded to the winner of each leg - the equivalent of 5 points for each entry, the overall winner being the team with the most points at the end of the race.
All legs will count with no discards allowed. The same system using 'single points' will be used for the In-Port racing, accounting for approximately 20% of the total points on offer.
The exact scoring details, taken from the Notice of Race are as follows:
SCORING
Each Boat starting and finishing and not thereafter retiring, being penalised or given redress shall be scored points as follows:
Points equal to the number of entries at the start of the race less the number of boats placed above her on that In-Port race day or leg, multiplied by the following factors:
(a) For an In-Port race day, multiplied by 1
(b) For each leg, multiplied by 5
STEALTHPLAY
StealthPlay was a new tactical initiative for the 2008-09 race which gave the crews one opportunity on each of the longer legs to have their location hidden from position reports and the public for 12 hours.
Race Headquarters continued to monitor each boat’s progress every 15 minutes for safety reasons, but the information was not made public until the StealthPlay was over.
StealthPlay is being considered for the 2011-12 race and if it is to be included, will be detailed in the Leg Sailing Instructions prior to the start of the race.
