Monsters of the sea, monsters on the greens
PUMA’s enforced sojourn on Tristan da Cunha may have done little to improve their sailing, but the round of golf they played on the remote island went a long way towards helping the Mar Mostro crew win the inaugural Volvo Ocean Race Beach Classic at Abu Dhabi.
PUMA Ocean Racing powered by BERG skipper Ken Read led his four-man team of watch captain Brad Jackson, Media Crew Member Amory Ross and 2008-09 PUMA crewman Jerry Kirby to a clean sweep of the golf scramble on Friday.
CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand and Groupama sailing team also entered the golfing challenge at the Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, where the sailors felt a little like fish out of water against the seasoned locals.
“I feel like I’m walking through mud when I play this sport,’’ Groupama’s Brad Marsh said.
But PUMA’s men seemed quite at home, especially when Read sunk a massive 50-foot putt to put his team in prime position.
Read will be hopeful that his team can continue their winning form when racing resumes with the Etihad Airways In-Port Race on January 13.
