Team Sanya press on towards huge Sunday homecoming
Mike Sanderson’s Team Sanya are on schedule for a rapturous welcome in their home port tomorrow despite a problem affecting two of their winches earlier today.
The race’s first ever sole Chinese entry were sailing in 15 knots of breeze when they suffered the problem with the supporting structure for the winches.
Reacting quickly to the situation, the Sanya crew transferred the headsail control line to another winch and were soon up and sailing again.
Sanya’s shore crew have been made aware of the issue and are talking to the boat’s design team about how best to fix it during the stopover at their home port.
With less than 300 nautical miles of straight line sailing ahead of them the Chinese team should have no problems making it safely to the finish line in Sanya tomorrow with several thousand fans expected to greet them.

It seems to me that the winch pod that broke is the one that was put highly under stress when the boat (then Telefonica Blue) had to be towed off a rock off the cost of Sweden in 2009.
