Team Sanya's bold southerly track on the second stage of Leg 4 is paying dividends and when race control switched the waypoint used in the distance to finish (DTF) calculation from the north east tip of the Philippines to the Poor Knights Islands close to Auckland, the Chinese team emerged in second place on the 1000 UTC position report.

"To ensure the accuracy of the race tracker three waypoints are used to calculate the fleet’s distance to finish (DTF) data"

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing also benefiteed from the change, moving from fourth to third.

Leg leaders CAMPER remained in front and Team Telefónica stayed in fifth with PUMA Ocean Racing in sixth. Groupama sailing team fared the worst however, dropping from second to fourth based on the new data.

The fleet now is divided by just 19.4 nautical miles from first to sixth position.

To ensure the accuracy of the race tracker three waypoints are used to calculate the fleet’s distance to finish (DTF) data during the second stage of Leg 4.

At 0800 UTC this morning the first waypoint just off the north east tip of the Philippines was replaced by the second waypoint located near the Poor Knights Islands north of Auckland.

Waypoint 3 is located just close to Tiritiri Matangi Island and will come into play as the fleet closes in on Auckland at the end of the leg.

  • It´s fun, accuracy is of less importance. Stock market / weather predictions comparison is a good one; this game is neither rocket science nor plain hard work, you can't win without a fair amount of luck – that’s why I’m not a capitalist, but still cheer on Sanya!

  • The leaderboard didn't reflect the real situation before that change and even less now. It should read Campper / Groupama and Telefonica to be more realistic

  • Would be necessary to have many more waypoints along the predicted route if we wish that the DTF (Distance to Finish) have any significance at this stage.

  • Like the stock market, none of these recalculations mean anything until the finish line. In the case of the ups and downs of the stock, it only counts when you take you money out!
