An army of Lisbon volunteers helped create a new work of art this weekend, clearing bags of rubbish from Algés Beach in the first part of a week-long process.

“It has been fantastic to help make this beautiful part of the world a little more stunning" - Jacqui Smith, Keep the Oceans Clean!

The latest beach clean led by the Volvo Ocean Race’s Keep the Oceans Clean! project saw scores of people answer the call to help pick up piles of rubbish that wash ashore from the ocean.

"The eighth edition of the Keep the Oceans Clean! beach clean up was great, and very productive,” said project coordinator Jacqui Smith.

“It has been fantastic to help make this beautiful part of the world a little more stunning. We hope that locals are inspired by the morning's activities, and realise how easy it is to make a big difference to a beach that needs some TLC.”

The collected waste will now be turned into a sculpture at a series of art workshops held at the Keep the Oceans Clean! Dome in the Race Village.

Run by Lisbon's Skeleton Sea artist João Parrinha, the free workshops take place daily from 3pm to 8pm from today to June 9.

“I’m very happy with the way the beach clean went,” Parrinha added. “There were lots of materials that will be perfect for the sculpture, so I'm excited to get started.”
