CAMPER highlights: Nicholson finds glory at the final stop
CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand had a long wait to grab an overdue top place in the podium but their final leg victory watched by tens of thousands in Galway could not have been better timed.
That stunning early-morning victory, after 39,270 hard miles around the world, ensured Chris Nicholson's crew finished the Race second overall behind Groupama and made amends for some agonising moments earlier in the Race when rival teams. notably Spanish rivals Telefonica and Ken Read's Puma, edged them out of the victors' berth.
CAMPER also proved formidable opponents in the In-Port Race series and served up an unforgettable triumph in their home port of Auckland to collect a maximum six points. They also pulled together no less than eight out of 10 possible podium places including four second spots to finish runners-up in the series just one point behind Puma.
They also suffered heartbreak in the Southern Ocean when bow damage scuppered their leg five hopes and forced them into an unscheduled pit stop for repairs in Chile before fighting through to Itajai.
