Leg 5 Competition has a winner!
The Leg 5 competition has ended and the winner has been notified.
Leg 5 from Auckland, New Zealand to Itajaí, Brazil proved to be the toughest stretch of the 2011-12 edition with only one of the six boats making it all the way to Brazil without having to stop for repairs.
Damages, injuries and incredible seamanship characterised this nerve-wracking leg, which featured unscheduled pit stops in places like Cape Horn, Puerto Montt and Punta del Este. Images like the ones of the Telefónica sailors being blown horizontal by monstrous waves while blasting through the Southern Ocean will live on in the memory for a long time. (Watch it again!)
For those of you with any doubts, the only team that sailed non-stop across the Southern Ocean all the way from Auckland to Itajaí in Leg 5 was PUMA Ocean Racing powered by BERG, skippered by Ken Read.
And the lucky winner, that was chosen randomly from the draw is: Mihnea Stoian, from Canada.
