The world famous Red Arrows air display team visited Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing's training boat during the Al Ain Aerobatic Show. The pilots found both crews needed plenty of characteristics in common after meeting sailor Adil Khalid.
“We wish Adil Khalid and the rest of the team the best for the race. We know that the challenge ahead is not going to be easy" - Red Arrows squadron leader Jim Turner
“With dedication, hard work, discipline, lots of practice and solid teamwork - just what we in the Red Arrows do - the chance of achieving the team's goals is definitely attainable,” Squadron Leader Jim Turner told Emirati crew member Khalid at the aerobatic show.
The Red Arrows, the UK's Royal Air Force team, are a byword around the world for daring and split-second timing as they dazzle crowds with their incredible jet-plane flying display.
The pilots were given a tour of Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing training boat and also tested out their muscle power on the winch pedestals. The Volvo Open 70 Azzam was on display at the Al Ain Aerobatic Show in Abu Dhabi until Monday evening.
“We wish Adil Khalid and the rest of the team the best for the race,” added Turner. “We know that the challenge ahead is not going to be easy.”
Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing is returning for the 2014-15 race after completing the 11th edition in 2011-12 with Britain's twice Olympic silver medallist Ian Walker back at the helm as skipper and also the return of Khalid in the crew.
Additionally, the experienced Volvo Ocean Race veteran Neil McDonald, who competed in the last race with Telefónica, has been signed as performance director.
“The visit of the Red Arrows team was truly inspiring,” Khalid said. “Their skill and dedication to their profession is truly admirable and their words of encouragement have further motivated me and my team mates to work even harder for the next edition of the race in 2014-15.”
