So what’s all this about?
Yep, you read it right – the Volvo Ocean Race is returning to Australian shores for the first time since 2005-06! Fans down under are already excited to welcome the boats to the region, and what better way to celebrate than to see in the new year in one of the country’s most iconic cities – Melbourne!
Where do I have to be?
Melbourne sits on the south-eastern tip of the country, almost equidistant from Adelaide in the west and Sydney in the east. Victoria is a picturesque region with national parks, an abundance of beaches and even alpine mountains!
It’s a short stopover, right?
The stopover is a little shorter than some of the others but will be just as action-packed – with a full programme of events.
Anything for my bucket list?
Plenty! For a start, Melbourne’s Royal Botanical Gardens is one of the finest on the planet. There’s also the Royal Exhibition Building, which won Unesco World Heritage status in 2004, or if you’d rather catch some live sport, be sure to head to Melbourne Cricket Ground, where you might even grab an international test match. Oh, and don’t forget to try the wine – all the wine.
What’s the weather like?
It’s warm – historically, temperatures range from 25-30°C in December, and much of the month is dry. Don’t forget your sun cream!
