4,600 nautical miles (5,294 miles, 8,519 kilometres)
The piracy problem meant that the start of this third leg was redrawn, with the boats once again transported to the (then) secret save haven port. Team Sanya was already waiting for them, having finally completed the first stage of Leg 2 and claiming her consolation points for missing the earlier pirate zone transportation north from the safe haven to the UAE.
The race then restarted and the entire fleet is now racing the second stage of Leg 3 to Sanya.
Amongst the challenges as they negotiate the steep sided Malacca Strait are frequent thunderstorms, alternating squalls and flat calms, as well as the avoidance of a dense armada of commercial shipping and a myriad of small local fishing boats. Having survived the rigours of the straits there will be little time for self congratulation as the final push to the finish in Sanya is likely to be a windy and cold upwind slog.
