Spinlock, founded in 1968, is an independent design-led company that specialises in the design and manufacture of rope holding equipment, deck hardware and personal protective equipment including lifejackets and harnesses for sailboats and sailors.
Based in Cowes, Isle of Wight, products in the range include cleats, clutches and jammers, holding ropes from 2mm to 32mm and loads up to 12000kgs, and tiller extensions used the world over as the only choice for performance boats. Spinlock rope holding and deck equipment is fitted extensively to the Volvo Ocean 65s and was chosen for its long-term performance on the demanding course that the race follows.
Spinlock lifejacket harnesses have won six design awards and are the choice of the performance sailor and those sailors who take their on-deck safety seriously. Identifying that there had been little product development for over 30 years, Spinlock produced a range of harness and lifejackets designed to ergonomically fit the body and its movements while sailing. Using modern sports materials, the lifejacket harness is attractive in design and comfortable to wear, encouraging sailors to actually to want wear their lifejacket.
Spinlock is also developing a new lifejacket harness, which will be a development of its performance Deckvest Lifejacket, but designed exclusively for the Volvo Ocean Race sailors. An intensive design programme has been in place since mid-2016. A core group of sailors has been helping to steer the lifejacket harness development to be a product that the teams are confident meets their needs and that they will wear and use. At the start of the race in October 2017, the Volvo Ocean Race teams will be departing with the very latest in lifejacket design and technology.
