La Etapa 1 se ha prolongado durante 31 días, desde que la flota partió de Alicante el 5 de noviembre y hasta que el PUMA llegó en carguero a Ciudad del Cabo el 6 de diciembre. Repasamos los momentos más importantes.

The rig onboard PUMA’s Mar Mostro failed at around 15:00 UTC in the southern Atlantic Ocean, about 2,150 nautical miles from Cape Town, South Africa. - 5 de noviembre: Salida desde Alicante (14:00h). Rotura del mástil de Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing (19:15h). Regresan a Alicante a motor.

- 6 de noviembre: Rotura en el casco de Team Sanya (09:30h). CAMPER, Telefónica, Groupama y PUMA pasan el Estrecho de Gibraltar.

- 7 de noviembre: Team Sanya se retira de la Etapa 1.

- 8 de noviembre: El Telefónica se pone líder por primera vez. Acaba de salir al Atlántico y pone rumbo al oeste junto al PUMA. Les sigue el CAMPER. El Groupama apuesta por la costa africana.

- 10 de noviembre: Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing se reincorpora a la Etapa 1.

- 11 de noviembre: Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing  anuncia su retirada de la Etapa 1.

- 12 de noviembre: El PUMA pone rumbo sur y el Telefónica traslucha dos horas más tarde. El barco de Ken Read encaja 26 millas al de Iker Martínez por primera vez desde la salida. Groupama languidece por la costa africana.  

- 16 de noviembre: El PUMA y el Telefónica cruzan el ecuador separados por una hora.

- 17 de noviembre: El PUMA pasa Fernando de Noronha; el Telefónica lo hace 55 minutos más tarde.

- 18 de noviembre: El Telefónica cambia de carril y se pone al este del PUMA para buscar la mejor posición de paso por el anticiclón de Santa Helena. En el reporte de las 14:00h se pone al frente de la flota y ya no cederá esa plaza hasta la meta.

- 21 de noviembre: El PUMA pierde su mástil (16:00h). Navegaba 21 millas por detrás del Telefónica tras casi 4.400 millas de duelo ininterrumpido.

- 22 de noviembre: PUMA Ocean Racing powered by BERG se retira de la Etapa 1.

- 23 de noviembre: El PUMA recibe combustible del carguero ZIM Monaco en mitad del Atlántico.

- 24 de noviembre: El CAMPER recorre 554,16 millas náuticas en 24 horas y gana el premio IWC Speed Record Challenge de la Etapa 1. El Race Village de Ciudad del Cabo abre sus puertas.

- 25 de noviembre: El Telefónica traslucha y se escapa definitivamente de su inmediato rival, el CAMPER, que había logrado acercarse a menos de 100 millas el día anterior.

- 26 de noviembre: Team Telefónica gana la Etapa 1 de la Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 con un tiempo de 21 días, 5 horas, 14 minutos y 25 segundo. El PUMA llega a Tristán de Acuña.

- 27 de noviembre: CAMPER con Emirates Team New Zealand finaliza la Etapa 1 en segunda posición (21d, 21h, 48m, 04s).

- 29 de noviembre: Groupama sailing team finaliza la Etapa 1 en tercera posición (24d, 04h, 28m, 31s).

- 30 de noviembre: El Azzam y el Sanya llegan en carguero a Ciudad del Cabo.

- 2 de diciembre: El PUMA sale de Tristán de Acuña rumbo a Ciudad del Cabo en carguero.

- 6 de diciembre: El PUMA llega a Ciudad del Cabo.
