The morning of the start Brasil 1 was forced into a last-minute reshuffle, recalling Knut Frostad when Marcel van Triest withdrew with a fever. The breeze on the course was building from 10-12 kts to a decent 15 by the 5 minute gun. ABN AMRO ONE crossed the start line first with the rest of the fleet in hot pursuit.

Torben Grael and his Brasil 1 crew were keen to use their local knowledge and the support of the Brazilian spectators to pull off a podium finish on the In Port race but halfway through the race were outmanoeuvred by the competition. ABN AMRO ONE led at the first mark, and extended this lead as they rounded mark two. At the second mark, Brasil 1 had to complete a penalty turn after tacking within two boat lengths of the mark and forcing movistar to give way. Pirates of the Caribbean was plagued by errors that destroyed its chances.

ABN AMRO ONE collected maximum points with movistar a creditable second. Ericsson Racing Team made the podium in third followed by a disappointed Brasil 1 who clawed their way back through the fleet after their penalty. ABN AMRO TWO finished fifth, with Pirates of the Caribbean at the back of the fleet.
