State-of-the-art photographic service aims to bring the 2008-09 race into sharper focus.

A cutting edge media photographic service, including a state-of-the-art online archive, will ensure rapid delivery of stunning images from the 2008-09 race to every corner of the globe.

To complete the picture, Rick Tomlinson, leading marine specialist, has been appointed official photographer while London agency onEdition will manage image distribution.

The digital archive system, known as Asset Bank, has been designed and built especially for the race by Brighton-based company, Bright Interactive. Asset Bank will be available in eight languages.

The entire photographic operation will be under the direction of Volvo Ocean Race Picture Desk Manager, Tim Stonton.

The archive provides the user with a digital management system which is quick and easy to use. The system is easy to access via images.volvooceanrace.org

The image library can also be accessed via the link from our online media centre found on the home page.

The all-new online image archive presents images from past Volvo races and a collection of the best images for each race, many of them shot by the crew members themselves.

Tomlinson has been a professional yachting photographer since 1986. He has competed as a crew member in four Whitbread/Volvo races, his first as crew member/boat builder aboard the maxi Drum in the 1985-86 Whitbread.

He was also the official race photographer in 2001-02 and was retained by Ericsson Racing Team in 2005-06 in partnership with France’s Thierry Martinez.

“The Whitbread and Volvo Race have been integral to my career as a yachting photographer,” Tomlinson said. “To do the Whitbread was my only ambition at school, and to race in four events was a great experience.

“With every race the challenges change dramatically; new designs, faster boats and better crews. It is a true professional arena. This time it’s the course that sets the new challenge, both for the sailors and for photographers like me that will capture the images.”

onEdition have an enviable reputation for quality distribution and count the Velux 5-Oceans Race, the Barcelona World Race and the Artemis Transat among their global clients.

The archive houses the entire collection of Volvo Ocean Race images, spanning three events.

“Nearly 1,000 media have already registered on the new image archive," says Stonton. “In fact, the re-vamped image library attracted 500 new registrations within the first 48 hours of its launch and the media is continuing to register now that the start of the world’s premier offshore race is less than six months away.”
