Ericsson 3 is the third boat to cross the finish line in Cape Town and should have consequently collected six race points. But having been penalised two points for the leg by the International Jury before the start for a measurement infringement Ericsson 3 will only collect four race points for crossing the finish line third.

'Finishing Places' for a leg are determined by the amount of race points awarded for that leg, amended when appropriate by penalties or redress awarded by the International Jury.

The fourth boat to cross the finish line (Green Dragon) will amass five race points, one more than Ericsson 3, and so will assume third place for the leg, while Ericsson 3 assume fourth place.

From the Notice of Race

6.1(b) For each Leg, each Boat will receive points equal to the number of entries at the start of the Race less the number of Boats placed above her on that Leg, amended when appropriate by penalties or redress awarded by the International Jury.

In Port Race finishing position is reached after combining the two in port race finishes.

Points scored at scoring waypoints count only toward the overall score and do not affect Leg places.

*TOTAL POINTS TIES: When there is a tie on total points between two or more Boats, the tie will be broken in favour of the Boat with the most first places counting Legs and In Port Races, and, if the tie remains, the most second places, and so on. If after completing the procedure described above a tie still exists, it will be broken in favour of the Boat that has the highest place on the last Leg. Any ties still remaining shall be broken in favour of the Boat that has the highest place on the next-to-last race (Leg or In Port race) and so on until all ties are broken. On an In Port Race day when there has been two races completed and there is a tie between Boats after the two races, the tie will be broken in favour of the Boat with the highest placing between the tied boats in the second race on that day, and shall be reapplied if ties remain.
